Seventeen Magazine and the LGBTQ Community

So I have had a subscription to Seventeen magazine since I was 12, and over the years it has indeed gotten better, however I remember when I was 16 reading an expose in it called “My Boyfriend was really a GIRL!” which was all about a girl who was dating this guy for a bit and found out that he was FTM transgender. They misgendered the boyfriend, were really awful about the whole thing, and made it seem like people who were transitioning were out to trick cisgender people.  Seventeen apologized for the incident, however that really isn’t enough.

However, Seventeen has been really good about being inclusive to its lesbian readers. In their romance exposes, they always have a lesbian/bisexual/pansexual voice, and while that’s great, I still wonder about that article they wrote on trans youth in 2009. That was three years ago, and I still remember it. That boy who was exposed with a picture in the magazine itself has to deal with that. And readers still have the impressions given from long ago.

This begs the question, when is Seventeen going to write about trans people  in a way that is inclusive? This is a classic example of remembering the LGB and forgetting the T. I’m exhausted from stories about LGB acceptance and the lack of inclusion of trans people.

So, Seventeen, good job in dedicating this months “serious topic” to girls coming out of the closet. But when are you going to do right by trans youth? we’ve been waiting for three years now.

My bet is, not any time soon.
