THE RAPE OF THE SAMBURU WOMEN

For more than fifty years, England has maintained military training facilities in the Samburu region of its former colony, Kenya.

During this period, women in the area have faced an epidemic of rape. Women from the Samburu, Massai, Rendile and Turkana indigenous communities have filed more than 600 official rape claims against British soldiers.

Yet, despite documentation of their claims, a three-year internal investigation by the Royal Military Police (RMP) cleared all soldiers of wrongdoing.Meanwhile, the victims have been shamed and outcast in their communities, many to the point of exile.

In the mid-1990s, Beatrice Chili responded to this situation by establishing the village of Senchen, a self-sufficient community run entirely by women. There, women build homes, weave textiles, gather and grow food, and raise children. This short film visits the brave women of Senchen, who speak candidly about their suffering and talk passionately about their demands for justice.

Watch the film to hear their stories and to find out how you can offer your support.

Some facts and stats about women in government:

iwillnotshavemyvagina:

This information is from the 4th edition of The Penguin Atlas of Women in the World (revised and updated by Joni Seager). This is not my intellectual property:

This information is dated November, 2007.

The country with the highest proportion of women in national government is Rwanda, with women comprising 49% of its national government.

The world average is 17.9%.

At least 31 countries have a higher percentage of women in national government than the United States (and Canada and the UK).

[image description: a man hanging off a window pane. he is bald and wears glasses. caption reads “a woman in politics is like a donkey doing calculus”]
Was scrolling through the Politics tag and came across this gem. Never mind that women are 51% of the population, yet the national government has only a 7% female population. Never mind that we worked toward every aspect of government as a support system even when we couldn’t vote. History is littered with stories that fall through the cracks of women being instrumental in every aspect of government throughout the years. Never mind that we are only paid 75 cents on the dollar for doing the same work as a man. And never mind that Rwanda, a small country in the middle of Africa has a rather equally based legislature, with 49% being female. Its been shown that the older the country is, the more males there are in government. wouldn’t you think that the country of “equal opportunity” would want an equal number of women in politics. Oh wait, I forgot. Women are too stupid to do anything except tend to the needs of small children, make sandwiches, fetch beer and spread our legs to please our husbands.
Listen ass-hat, I’m an intelligent, independent, politically and economically minded woman who is planning on going in to politics. Will it be hard? Of course it will be. But if it means proving people like you wrong, then it will be worth it.

YES. And I AM GOING.
I am so excited about this.
Everyone in the Orlando area should come to this.
Seriously. October 28th. 7 PM. Rollins College.
Be there or be square. Or be there and be square. I don’t care. Just go if you can. It’s free!
Also the Guerrilla Girls will be there the next night. I am also going to that and I am super excited.
